Distributed by Frameline Distribution.
Recipient of the Frameline30 Audience Award for Best Documentary and of a 2005 Frameline Film & Video Completion Fund grant, The Believers is an unprecedented documentary that shatters assumptions about faith, gender, and religion. Built around the world’s first transgender gospel choir, the film portrays the choir’s dilemma – how to reconcile their gender identity with the widespread belief that changing one’s gender goes against the word of God.

The Believers is a documentary about the Gay Grammy winning Transcendence Gospel Choir of The City of Refuge Church, located in San Francisco. http://home.comcast.net/~tgchoir/
I viewed The Believers for the second time tonight at the Center presentation. The was a good crowd. The director and some of the film subjects were present.
The film’s power is in showing lives lived against the grain of society. And the beauty and grandeur of music created by those lives.
I will paraphrase what one of the film’s subjects eloquently expressed:
Each of the singers has overcome great challenges to participate in the choir. The music they sing expresses the victory of battles won. Their singing encourages us, the listeners, to fight for own private and public victories. Through the Transcendence Gospel Choir we gain strength to keep up the good fight.
